I cannot believe that in August it will be two years at NUHS! When I started this journey, I had no idea how rigorous this program would be. The rigors of the AOM program are not only academic but the time needed to study is astronomical. Well, for me I must sit with information review then study, for each class.

In undergrad when I had a two-credit course it was usually a GPA booster. The two credit courses here require just as much work as the 3-4 credit courses. When I first started, I worked two jobs that ended after the first trimester. I can remember the students who were further along in the program would tell me it will all come together…ummm I am still waiting!!!

My family did not understand why I was so stressed or studying all the time. How many of you had to educate friends and family while at NUHS? My daughter was beginning her first year of college and my son a sophomore in high school. Now she is going into her junior year and my son starts college in the fall. I think they now respect what I do and have a deeper understanding and appreciation for Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology. Although my daughter thought I was doing the Chiropractic program as well. Friends miss my presence at parties, brunches, and vacations. I honestly don’t have the time. Some have come to understand, and others have moved on.

When I walk into the clinic and see my patients it makes it all worth it! The endless hours, the tears (yes tears), the missed time with family and friends. One of my friends at NUHS who has become family came to my son’s graduation party. She will be graduating in August as the Valedictorian. I left to greet guests, and she was holding an introductory course in AOM! I wish I would have gotten a picture. They were firing questions at her, and she answered with eloquence and grace.

These two years have been difficult, but I would not trade the time spent at NUHS for anything. I am excited, nervous, yet eager to head into year three…the final chapter!

My name is Monique Carter and I am a student in National University's AOM program. I chose this program because the basic tenets of Chinese Acupuncture and Herbs align with a holistic healing process that is steeped in years of tradition and research. I anticipate that learning these skills and applying this knowledge will allow me to help many in need. Starting this journey at the age of 49 has been humbling as well as life-changing, I am excited and grateful!
