As a Tri-9 chiropractic intern at the NUHS clinic, I have witnessed firsthand the remarkable healing influence of manual therapy in chiropractic. Let’s discuss the benefits of chiropractic care. Chiropractic adjustments (spinal manipulations) have been shown to have profound effects on both the physical and psychological well-being of individuals as adjustments aim at restoring proper alignment and function of the spine. The healing touch of manual therapy in chiropractic is backed by a growing body of scientific evidence. A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic adjustments provided significant pain relief and improved physical function in individuals suffering from chronic low back pain. Chiropractic Manipulations have been shown to enhance joint mobility and flexibility and a different study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine revealed that spinal manipulations yielded increased range of motion and improved physical performance in athletes. By restoring proper joint function, adjustments facilitate optimal movement patterns, which can prevent injuries and enhance athletic performance.

Beyond the physical benefits, adjustments have a great impact on the psychological well-being of patients. The central nervous system plays a crucial role in regulating emotions and mental health and research indicates that chiropractic care can positively influence mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. I’ve had patients giggle, others tear up in relief, and others that reported taking “great naps” post adjustment treatment. Adjustments have been shown to regulate the release of neurotransmitters in the brain, including endorphins. These endogenous opioids contribute to pain relief and induce feelings of relaxation and happiness. A research study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics revealed that chiropractic adjustments increased plasma levels of beta-endorphins, providing a potential neurochemical reason for the positive emotional changes reported by patients. By continuing to explore the benefits of chiropractic adjustments through research, we can contribute to the advancement of this field and enhance patient care.
