The Determinants of Health & A Nice Autumn Weekend

In naturopathic medicine, the primary goal is to establish the conditions for health. In order to do this, we must acknowledge and correct any imbalances in the things that determine health. This is how we create the conditions that support our health.

What determines our health? There are too many to list here, but some include inborn determinants (like genetics) and history of disturbances (like past illnesses or medical interventions).

However, a large part of that which determines our health includes hygienic and lifestyle determinants, and many people are probably already familiar with some of them. Lifestyle determinants include a wide range of things, such as clean water, proper nutrition, sufficient sleep, supportive relationships, spiritual connection, movement, connection with nature, culture and meaningful work.

This weekend, supported some of my own determinants of health. My wife and puppy visited me, which was super special. We went on several walks outside in the sunshine, enjoying the crisp air of a Saturday in autumn. I took some nice photos of the changing autumn colors. When we got back home, we shared an incredible homemade and nourishing dinner together. I played with my puppy, had a great conversation with my wife, relaxed and rested, and then enjoyed an excellent night of sleep.

Everything that I described above nourishes my health, and I knew it was ‘that time in the trimester’ to take a bit of a break from school specifically to recharge and nourish myself. Supporting my health is always a priority (even as a student), and I can now say that I feel fully ready to focus and embrace the upcoming week of school!

This simple metaphor captures a complex concept. In a handful of words, Hafez illustrates a helpful psychological principle that also comprises the theological core of the world’s largest religion – that of relationship based on mutual delight, adoration and love.

To Gain the World and Lose Your Soul

I once had a season of life in which I wrestled to reconcile the trade-off between gaining the world and losing my soul. In a great act of mercy, I lost. Looking back, I realize my biggest blind spot was my stubbornness and pride. I thought I knew what was best for me and obstinately pursued it, instead of focusing my heart on assurance and surrendering the rest to servanthood.
