According to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Jobs of  2019 ranking, health care jobs are “among the best available in the U.S.” In fact, eight of its top ten jobs are in health care fields. A bachelor of biomedical science (BS) degree is amazingly versatile and will prepare you for a wide range of jobs and post-graduate educational opportunities.

It’s a unique degree that combines basic science courses such as microbiology, physiology and chemistry with medical courses like pathology, pharmacology and immunology. At National University of Health Sciences (NUHS), you can even build a customized curriculum by choosing the courses you want to focus on and are best suited to your career goals, including an option to earn an extra credential with the Emphasis in Nutrition.

4 Great Post-grad Careers with a Biomedical Sciences Degree

There are a wide variety of jobs for graduates with biomedical science degrees which are highly paid and sought-after. Here are just a few:

1. Forensic Technologist

Provide impartial evidence and testimony regarding crimes to legal Officials. Forensic technologists are well-versed in the analysis of bodily fluids, DNA, hair, etc.

2. Pharmaceutical Sales

Sales representatives don’t just sell medicine — they also teach prospective customers (typically physicians and nurse practitioners) about the scientific properties of various drugs, how they function in the body, and how they effectively treat illness. They need to understand the science behind the products they sell.

3. Toxicology

Among science careers, toxicology is perhaps the most diverse, because it combines different fields of study, including biology, chemistry, pharmacology, medicine and nursing, to assess the safety and biological effects of drugs, chemicals, agents and other substances on living organisms. Toxicologists with biomedical science undergraduate degrees spend most of their time in laboratories, while those with higher-level degrees might work in offices planning experiments and interpreting data.

4. Biomedical Researcher

The field of biomedical research continues to grow at a rapid pace. Job opportunities include positions in research hospitals, universities, labs and other research institutes.

A Strong Foundation for Graduate Healthcare Degrees

Many students choose a biomedical science degree as a strong foundation for continuing into graduate medical programs to become a medical doctor or dentist, for example, or for a career in natural medicine, such as a chiropractic physician or naturopathic doctor.

NUHS students have the added benefit of access to graduate level facilities at the undergraduate level. For example, undergraduate students learn anatomy by studying real human cadavers in the graduate-level anatomy laboratory, rather than with models or textbooks at other institutions. And, because science is our main focus you will be learning from instructors who specialize in those fields. Many of your instructors also teach courses for graduate-level degrees.

Another reason students choose NUHS for their biomedical science degree is being on a science and healthcare focused campus with students who are earning advanced degrees. Our university is designed to build community across programs for our students through collaborative learning opportunities.

Saving You Tuition, Getting Your Career Started Sooner

National University helps you optimize your time as an undergraduate student by allowing you to tailor classes to your career goals. You can anchor your degree with basic science courses in, for instance, physiology, microbiology, chemistry and anatomy. By adding advanced courses such as neurosciences, histology, immunology and embryology, you can develop a curriculum that will specifically fit your future plans.

If you qualify for the Advanced Scholars Program, you will be able to start in National University’s Doctor of Chiropractic or Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine programs a year earlier, saving tuition and beginning your professional career even sooner!
