It All Started Three Years Ago!

I was reminded today that we had our White Coat Ceremony three years ago this week. Most of us graduate in a few months. It has gone so fast! I love looking at the pictures from that ceremony, and seeing the joy and nervous excitement in our faces! Thinking back to the last year, and the craziness of 2020, I am thankful that we were fortunate enough to even have a ceremony like this as there hasn’t been one recently due to COVID restrictions.

Now, most of us are in clinic, and wearing our white coats every day. But three years ago when these photos were taken, we had spent three hours in the anatomy lab that morning, and another three hours in lecture that afternoon! Literally, we had our ceremony at 3:15 p.m., but were in class until 3 p.m. I’m thankful that our schedules have lightened up a little since then! Now we simply get to focus on patient care, along with a class or two.

This is us taking our oath. My dad is the one in the blue sweater on the right taking a very proud photo. My mom is the one that took this particular photo, she was running all around trying to capture every moment from every angle. I sure do love my parents!

This is what pure joy looks like. I had just received my white coat, and it felt AWESOME!

I love the sport of triathlon and will totally geek out if anyone wants to talk bikes or racing with me! I’m looking forward to blogging about study tips, ways to have fun on campus, and all the details of a full-time medical student. Recently I have been aware of the role of truth telling in patient care. The truth heals, but it is uncomfortable, which is why we go to great lengths to avoid it.

The training of doctors is centered on learning how to meet patient needs. This looks different in each case. For some, emergency care is needed. For others, it is pain management or disease control. Still for others, it is guidance and encouragement to make lifestyle changes.
