Gasparilla 2019

by Feb 1, 2019

The last weeks were busy ones for the clubs on campus! As president of Sports Council I had a few meetings, Club Lunch – where we speak to the Tri 1’s about each club on campus and our first meeting. I ran this week’s meeting and presented on Ankle Sprains, drawing a little bit from my athletic training background. The presentation seemed to be well received and I used a few minutes at the end of the meeting to teach the lower Tri students some basic orthopedic exams for the ankle and even demonstrated how to tape an ankle for sports practices.

After our meeting was done, we all got ready to head to the Tri Mixer at The Tamiami in Downtown St. Pete. Every trimester the entire school meets up at a restaurant or bar for catered food and drinks as a chance to mingle and get to know the new students. It’s a fun event every trimester and since this incoming class is a big group (12 students) it was nice meeting them all.

With it being the beginning of the trimester, we are just barely getting started with early assessment exams and having to study hard every weekend. That being said, a large group of us from Tri 5 and a few students from Tri 2 went to attend Gasparilla in Tampa this weekend. Gasparilla is the largest event every year in the Tampa Bay area, this year amassing almost 300 thousand attendees! To kick off Gasparilla, fleets of “pirates” sail up the Tampa bay before docking at the marina near downtown. They then “kidnap” the mayor of Tampa and “steal” the key to the city. This then commences the giant parade of floats that throw beads to the thousands of people that line the parade route all the way to South Tampa. I had a great time hanging out with my friends and making new ones at the parade and amassed almost 12 pounds of beads! Can’t wait to get back to school on Monday and get the adjustment I need after a full day of wearing so many beads…

Personal Thoughts on Making a Difference

When I first entered chiropractic school, I believed that what we did was adjust and treat spinal conditions. However, chiropractic care is so much more than any individual aspect of care; it is an ideology of wholistic health care not driven from the treatment of illnesses, but actually aligning all aspects of life with the ultimate goal of health and preventive care.
