When things don’t go as planned…PIVOT!

By far the most interesting things I have learned so far is pulse diagnosis. Did you know that there are more than 25 standard pulse types in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)? Ultimately the pulse reveals how well the patient’s blood and Qi are flowing through their meridians. It is said that it takes decades to reach the level of a master pulse diagnostician.

So, as a student who is eager to learn, how can I practice my pulse taking skills during a pandemic when social distancing is a must? Well luckily, I’ve been quarantining with my family, so I have been able to take their pulses. Nevertheless, I decided to shift my focus on the theory behind pulse taking, while I don’t have patient interactions. I had to adjust my plans and timelines in many areas in my life due to Covid-19, but I must persist in achieving my goals. I remind myself that small steps are still steps in the right direction.

We just completed the first round of exams this trimester; and the week after exams I try to let myself recover as much as possible. I find it is very important to find balance whenever possible, and remember that when things don’t go as planned: pivot!
