Thanksgiving in New Jersey

We got the day off for Thanksgiving as well as the day after so I went home to New Jersey for Thanksgiving break to see my friends and family. In addition to those two days, I requested off the day before and the Monday after the weekend to book cheaper flights and extend my stay at home. All my old friends were home for the holiday as well so I was able to catch up with them and go to some of our old hangout spots in town. I also drove up to North Jersey to see more of my family after Thanksgiving, which was also very nice. Ever since I started the program, I haven’t had a chance to fly home for Thanksgiving, so being able to spend it with family was long overdue. My girlfriend also flew home with me so I was happy she could spend it with me. It was a really nice weekend that we all enjoyed very much.

Being in clinic allowed me to go home without the need to study or do any assignments. It is nice to finally be able to go to clinic as many go to work, then go home and relax. When I was in class, it seemed to never end because there was always more work to be done for the upcoming exam or assignment. I am happy those days are over and I can focus a little more on myself.

My mom has been continuously reading my blogs and while I was home for break I had another sad moment of recollection. As I looked back at my previous posts I realized I am very close to the end. Though I said I am relieved to no longer have classes, I am also sad because I enjoyed going to class. I enjoyed being a student and focusing on learning all that I could in order to prepare me to see patients.

Now I am seeing patients and though it is nice to know what to do, there is something uniquely fulfilling about learning something new. Whether it was performing a new adjusting technique, memorizing a biochemical mechanism of action, or recognizing a sine qua non of a pathology for the first time, there were many times I was filled with enthusiasm during my time at NUHS.

When one door closes another opens and each day I am closer and closer to graduation. Until then I will continue to learn as much as I can in clinic but it is surreal when I stop and think of it.

Running With Scissors

As weeks 14 and 15 approach, we mark the end of yet another successful trimester! This trimester, like many others, presented its own unique challenges and learning opportunities. I believe the theme of this was truly “running with scissors,” as Dr. Jourdan would say. But what does that really mean?

Celebrating Family: Mathis’ Bar-Mitzvah

This past weekend I had the pleasure of traveling to Atlanta, Georgia to attend my little cousin Mathis’ Bar-Mitzvah. For those of you who may not be educated in Jewish traditions and practices, a Mitzvah is simply the transition for young boys and girls into Jewish adulthood. This is an incredibly impactful moment in our lives, and above all…

Clinic Placement

Contrary to my last post depicting my fatigue through this trimester, our choosing of student clinic placement today does present the light at the end of the tunnel. By selecting which clinic I will spend at least Tri 8 in, I am guiding myself toward the population I want to serve.
