Entering chiropractic school is exciting, especially when you finally get to study what you believe in: helping people heal through natural, science-informed, hands-on care. But with that passion often comes a harsh reality—public skepticism, slander and the constant need to defend your profession. It’s not uncommon to hear dismissive comments like “chiropractors are fake doctors” or “alternative medicine is all placebo.” As a student, it can feel discouraging, especially when you know how much anatomy, neurology and physiology you study just to get to student clinic.
The Rise of Complementary and Alternative Medicine
The truth is, part of the stigma stems from misunderstanding. Chiropractic and other complementary and alternative medicine fields have evolved dramatically in the last few decades. Modern chiropractors emphasize evidence-based care, interdisciplinary collaboration and the integration of functional medicine and neuroscience. Public perception often lags behind and hangs onto the past practices of chiropractic. Unfortunately, misinformation online and outdated stereotypes can amplify those misconceptions, making students feel like they have to prove themselves before they’ve even graduated.
Chiropractic Medicine: At the forefront of evidence-based health care
But here’s the hopeful part: the narrative is changing, and we are at the forefront of it. The advances we have made in our field and the evidence-based approaches we have adopted are bridging the gap between traditional medicine and alternative models. Students today have the opportunity to become the new voice of chiropractic—one that is compassionate, informed and science-literate.
Navigating slander means staying grounded in your “why.” Being someone who spends time on social media, I am always exposed to the loudest critics, and it has often become really discouraging. But I remind myself why I chose this path: to help people feel better, move better, and live fuller lives. Let criticism sharpen your communication, not your cynicism. The best way to change minds isn’t through arguments, it’s through outcomes. As the next generation of chiropractors, our work, integrity, and patient results will speak louder than any stereotype ever could.
