On Friday, April 19th, National University of Health Sciences proudly honored 74 graduates from both its College of Professional Studies and College of Allied Health Sciences.
The ceremony had been postponed by one day due to heavy rains and Chicago area flooding. The Village of Lombard had declared a state of emergency on Thursday, April 18th after rising water had damaged many homes and made several main roadways impassable. The university was forced to close its campus and all Illinois clinics that day, and notified students of the new graduation date through its automated e2campus alert system.
The College of Allied Health Sciences featured National University President James F. Winterstein as its commencement speaker. His address was especially heartfelt as he will be retiring in June, making it the last commencement speech of his presidency. To the massage therapy graduates, he reinforced the importance of their accomplishment and shared a poem titled “The Master’s Touch,” relating it to the importance of human touch in our lives. He encouraged the bachelor of science graduates on their next steps, as most of them will be going on to pursue additional degrees.
The College of Professional Studies welcomed as its speaker Phillip Nicotera, M.Ed., M.D., Provost of the Caruth Health Education Center at St. Petersburg College. Dr. Nicotera has worked closely with National University in launching its successful Florida campus, and is a leader in health care education with a strong background in health education policy and research. He spoke to graduates about the realities of working in health care, the danger of overconfidence, and the need to keep growing and learning. Dr. Nicotera also received the honorary doctor of laws degree from National University of Health Sciences during the ceremony.
