On Saturday May 17, DC interns from National University’s Whole Health Center – Aurora clinic, along with clinicians Dr. Sonia Joubert and Dr. Manuel Duarte, volunteered at the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association (NEDSRA) 35th Annual Track and Field Meet, held at Glenbard East High School in Lombard.

NEDSRA provides special recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities in several communities in DuPage County, partnering with municipalities and park districts.

During this event, DC interns Samuel Hage, Khalaf Khalifeh, Justine Johnson, Amandeep Sangha and David Serrano provided athletes and other volunteers with free stretches and soft tissue work.  This event was a huge success. The NUHS crew was able to treat over 90 athletes with special needs.

“We look forward to attending more events like this in the future,” said intern Justine Johnson.

“It was a very intense, working day at the same time very rewarding to see the smile and laughter of the athletes” stated Dr. Sonia Joubert. “While most of the participants were young people, the oldest individual we took care of was in his mid 70s. NESDRA is an amazing program that gave us the opportunity to share our time and skill, and give our students an educational experience in working with this unique group.”

Outreach activities to benefit local organizations, such as NEDSRA, is just part of how NUHS gives back to the communities it serves.
