Earlier this summer, National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) Naturopathic Professional Student Association (NPSA) invited Gates Maier, DC, to discuss the importance of testing in fertility. Dr. Maier has been a practicing chiropractic physician since 2020.

Dr. Maier explained that chronic pain or fatigue can signal to the body that it is not a safe environment for pregnancy. As a result, he emphasizes the critical importance of properly executed testing. To get a deeper understanding of the body, he uses specific labs that help increase fertility success and decrease pregnancy loss.

The Role of Hormones and Immunity

While testing hormones, it’s important to know when a woman is most fertile. Dr. Maier notes that six days after a woman ovulates, which is day 21 of her menstrual cycle, is the best time to execute a hormones test because the body is in high demand for progesterone. If hormones were tested any earlier, the levels would look in range and wouldn’t give a clear and correct result.

Additionally, Dr. Maier emphasized that a healthy immune system along with hormonal balance is what creates fertility success. A stressed immune system signals the body that it’s unsafe for pregnancy. He recommended testing beyond standard panels to identify immune system stressors like allergies or food sensitives, chronic inflammation or autoimmune conditions.

Why Gut Health Matters

Gut health plays a vital role in keeping the immune system healthy and hormones balanced. Dr. Maier explained that imbalances like bacterial overgrowth or mold exposure can lead to chronic inflammation and nutrient deficiencies which negatively impact fertility health.

Shaping the Future of Fertility Care

Dr. Maier’s seminar highlighted the importance of comprehensive testing, hormonal balance, immune system health and gut health in fostering a supportive environment for conception. Beyond helping individuals achieve fertility success, Dr. Maier emphasized the profound impact of improving health for future generations.

“You are going to be the best doctors in the game to assist patients with fertility and help people lead healthier lives,” Dr. Maier said. “What I really want to instill into you students is: how can you set up your legacy as doctors by caring for and improving the health of the next generation?”
