On Saturday, August 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Pinellas Park Medical District (PPMD) hosted its annual Back-to-School Backpack Drive, newly renamed the Dr. Daniel Strauss Memorial Backpack Event to honor his legacy and far-reaching impact on the community.
Dr. Strauss was a dedicated local leader whose service left a lasting mark on Pinellas Park and the broader Tampa Bay area. He devoted his time and leadership to the Pinellas Park Gateway Chamber of Commerce, PPMD and many other local organizations. Among the numerous initiatives he helped advance, the backpack drive stood out as one of his passion projects, as he played an instrumental role in helping launch it nearly a decade ago. In addition to rallying event support and school supplies from the community, he took great satisfaction in previous years by personally donating bikes for the event.
“Rooted in Dr. Dan’s legacy of compassion, education, service and love for children, this event honors his belief that every child deserves to feel seen, supported and never picked on for not having the proper resources,” the Pinellas Park Gateway Chamber of Commerce shared on its website.
National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) – Florida, where Dr. Strauss served as Dean of the College of Professional Studies, is also a founding member of PPMD.
At this year’s event, volunteers, community partners and local leaders came together to successfully donate 600 backpacks stuffed with school supplies to help students in kindergarten through college prepare for the new school year.
“This is what community looks like,” The Pinellas Park Gateway Chamber of Commerce posted on its Facebook page. “Local businesses and the City coming together to invest in our kids and their education. We couldn’t be prouder.”
Beyond supplies and backpack giveaways, the event organizers planned the day with live music, food, games and prizes for kids. The Dr. Daniel Strauss Memorial Backpack Event is a free, family-friendly annual celebration held prior to the start of the school year to honor teachers and support students.
