Throughout chiropractic school, adjusting technique classes have always been some of my favorites, as I imagine is probably the case for most students. Many of us enter this profession with dreams centered around the art and excitement of the adjustment. Chiropractic manipulative techniques and spinal manipulation are defining features of our field, distinguishing us from many other health care professions. What many may not realize early on, however, is how easily we fall into patterns, favoring certain techniques over others. We tend to lean on the ones we enjoy most or find success with as well as those we simply feel most confident performing. Over time, this comfort can narrow our range and limit our adaptability as clinicians.
The Value of the Clinic Experience
My time in clinic has dramatically reshaped my perspective. I’ve come to appreciate just how vital it is to develop versatility. We absolutely must be proficient in a variety of techniques and approaches in order to accommodate any of our patients. Small adjustments, such as changing the doctor’s contact, the patient’s contact, or even the patient’s position, can make a world of difference in the quality and effectiveness of care.
There are techniques I once relied on heavily that I now rarely use, and others I once overlooked that have become central to my patient care. This evolution has reminded me about the importance of self-awareness and reflection through recognition of my default tendencies and intentionally working to expand beyond them.
Mastering Chiropractic Technique
Ultimately, growth as a chiropractic medicine student comes not from mastering one technique, but from mastering the ability to choose the right one for the right patient at the right time. The ability to modify our approach, refine our technique, and continually learn from each patient encounter ensures that our care remains both effective and individualized. Adjusting is an art, not simply a skill, and one I look forward to practicing for a lifetime.
