Running With Scissors

Friday, April 11, 2025

As weeks 14 and 15 approach, we mark the end of yet another successful trimester! This trimester, like many others, presented its own unique challenges and learning opportunities. I believe the theme of this was truly “running with scissors,” as Dr. Jourdan would say. But what does that really mean?

Running with scissors is a phrase often used to deter children from poor behavior or designate something as “risky” which could potentially wind up with someone getting hurt. In this case, however, it is the exact opposite. Running with scissors was our cohorts’ instruction when being told how to learn and apply our clinical knowledge. We have an obligation to become the best interns and future Chiropractors possible, so that we can provide the highest level of health care as we enter into our student clinics. To do this, we need to learn how to handle any and all of the crazy and unpredictable situations that inevitably happen. We were essentially thrown into the fire, and told to trust ourselves, our education, and our experience. While it may have been a struggle at times, and my people-pleasing desires wanted nothing more than a clear and concise yes or no answer, we not only survived: we persevered! Every clinical encounter, standardized patient, or new challenge was simply an opportunity to learn and grow.

I am often overwhelmed when I try to think back on not only the experience this program has been, but the growth I have felt along the way. It feels like just yesterday I was a wide-eyed, over-eager Tri 1 student, who looked at the students in clinic like they were a world away. Yet, here I am, just a month away from starting my own internship. I cannot begin to express my gratitude for where life has taken me, and all of those people in my life who have supported me to help me get here today. This blog has been really special to me, and I feel like it has given me a platform to really take you all along with me throughout this journey.

With just one more year of school left, I finally feel like I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I just hope that I can inspire all of you to try running with scissors (metaphorically of course)!
