I can’t say that one event or moment has sparked personal growth. Rather, it has been a culmination of new relationships, overwhelming moments and the level of demand placed on those in this program that has led me to new ways of thinking. One of the most important realizations I have had during my time in chiropractic school is that success does not have to be an individual pursuit. Early in my program, I focused heavily on keeping up academically and managing the demands of a doctoral program.
The Importance and Value of Community
As students, we are also managing relationships, families, jobs, finances and unexpected challenges. In other words, life happens! We are all going through different circumstances while working toward the same goal. Because of this, I have learned that it is not “every person for themselves.” It truly takes a village to make it through a demanding program.
This realization changed how I viewed my role within our school community. I began placing more importance on participating in student organizations, creating opportunities for students to connect and welcoming newer students. I want students to feel like they are joining a family rather than entering a competitive environment.
A simple conversation, invitation to an event, or willingness to help a classmate can make someone feel less alone. I have discovered the value of connection, service and creating a sense of belonging. I want to contribute to a positive environment rather than simply focusing on my own accomplishments.
Creating a Meaningful Culture
Chiropractic school has challenged me academically, but it has also shown me the importance of community, compassion and showing up for others. I want to help create a culture at the NUHS Florida campus built on understanding, encouragement and community, where we celebrate each other’s successes, support one another through challenges, and remember that we are stronger together than alone.
