I Miss the Swans!

by Nov 13, 2020

Every summer, we have swans in the lake on campus. Typically, they have babies (I have shared about that and all their cuteness in previous blog posts) and it is a pleasure having them for the few months they are here. In addition to their cuteness, and the constant challenge of avoiding them when walking to class, they serve a very important purpose. They keep the geese away! Unfortunately, our school did not bring them back this summer. Likely due to having limited students on campus due to the COVID restrictions.

Lake Janse

You might think this is not a big deal, but it is super inconvenient. The geese are everywhere! While the swans tend to stay near the lake, the geese have no boundaries and leave their droppings all over the place. I will take this time to give a shout-out to the grounds and maintenance staff who do an amazing job keeping our grounds looking beautiful and keeping the geese droppings (and swan droppings for that matter) cleared off the walkways. They work tirelessly year-round to keep our campus beautiful, and it is greatly appreciated.

Lili Dog

While the swans aren’t here, the fall leaves have fallen, and we had a couple days of gorgeous weather. I took advantage of it and studied outside by the lake. Lily appreciated the time she was able to sunbathe, and she thankfully scared off the geese!

I’m originally from Maryland and will always consider it to be my home. I live on campus, in the Bucholz building with my dog, Lily. I love the sport of triathlon and will totally geek out if anyone wants to talk bikes or racing with me! I’m looking forward to blogging about study tips, ways to have fun on campus, and all the details of a full-time medical student. I love talking with people, so if you have any questions please email me at [email protected]

This Latin aphorism is inscribed above the doorway of the weight room. When I first noticed it, I asked my friend what it meant. I revisit their response often: character over reputation. What a hard concept. As simple as it is, it is a call to integrity that I struggle with every day.
