April Commencement at NUHS Honors 62 Grads

Friday, April 24, 2015

A sunny spring afternoon greeted National University’s April graduates as they flowed out from the Student Center with diplomas in hand. 62 students from five academic programs were joined by a full house of families, faculty and staff.

This ceremony’s special commencement speaker was Dr. Charles Tasharski. He has served on the university’s faculty for 44 years, and is also an alumnus (DC class of ’66.) Dr. Tasharski, a highly respected radiology professor, will be retiring at the end of the upcoming summer trimester.

Dr. Tasharski spoke to the importance of perseverance and adaptation to change. He reminded the audience of the state of the world, culture and values of his graduation year, 1966, and how his own expectations from life had adapted to the changing realities of adulthood and career demands.

Later, President Joseph Stiefel also spoke to the graduates, and indeed to all family, faculty and staff present, indicating each member’s important role in the collective “us” that makes up National University of Health Sciences. He likened the day’s valedictorian and guest speakers to “soloists” who, nonetheless, require the support of an entire choir to bring out their best.
