International Students
National University of Health Sciences welcomes students from all over the world! In fact, National University graduates currently practice in over 27 countries and on 6 continents. Our staff is experienced in helping international students apply for and plan their degree program, and can answer questions you may have about your extended stay in the United States.
Before your arrival in the U.S., we can assist you in arranging housing, and can also help in your search for financial aid. Although work options may be limited for international students, there are some work-study openings in select university departments.
Admissions Requirements
National University of Health Sciences is authorized under federal law to enroll non-immigrant alien students. International students may apply for all of our professional degree programs, but, due to visa restrictions, international students are not eligible to participate in our Prerequisite Program.
Because of difficulties inherent to overseas communications, international students should expect the application procedure to take several months. It is strongly recommended that international students apply to the University at least one year in advance. Students seeking admission to the University must provide the following documentation:
1. A properly completed Application for Admission including a non-refundable $55 fee (USD).
2. Transcript(s) of college records (or acceptable equivalent) must be evaluated by World Education Services, Educational Perspectives or Josef Silny. Transcript evaluations must be sent directly from WES to National University for consideration.
3. Students for whom English is not their primary language must submit proof of proficiency in the English language. For all first professional program applicants (DC, ND, DAc, MAc, MAc-HM) taking the TOEFL exam, a minimum total score of 80 is required. Additionally, a minimum score of 26 on the Speaking section and 22 on the Listening section is required. The University’s institution code is 1567. Students who successfully complete coursework in English Composition at a regionally accredited U.S. school may be eligible for a waiver of the TOEFL exam.
Effective January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT will introduce a new 1-6 scoring scale that aligns with the CEFR, providing a more intuitive report of English proficiency. This new scale will be presented alongside the traditional 0-120 scale for a two-year transition period, with the new overall score being the average of the four section scores (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing), rounded to the nearest half band. Students taking the TOEFL iBT will need to achieve a minimum score of 5 to meet the University’s proof of proficiency in the English language.
An additional option to establish English proficiency is Duolingo. Via Duolingo, a minimum overall score of 110 is required. Additionally, a minimum score of 150 on the Speaking section and 120 on the Listening section is required. An institutional code is not required for Duolingo. Students who successfully complete coursework in English Composition at a regionally accredited U.S. school may be eligible for a waiver of the Duolingo exam.
4. A Proof of Financial Support Form must be submitted showing evidence that adequate provisions have been made to meet your financial needs during the first academic year of study. The United States Department of Immigration does not permit international students to be employed during their first nine months of attendance by anyone other than the National University of Health Sciences, which has limited employment opportunities for its students.
The international student deadline for our January, May and September terms is usually the first day of the month preceding the start of the term: December 1, April 1, and August 1. International applicants must have submitted all necessary admission forms by those dates.
Canadian Students
National University is pleased to welcome Canadian students and happy to assist them through the admissions process. Most Canadian university transcripts can be evaluated by our Office of Admissions. For some schools, a WES transcript evaluation will be required. Applicants may check with their NUHS admissions counselor to confirm this process.
Canadian Student Tuition Waiver
NUHS is pleased to offer a 20% tuition waiver to new Canadian students who start the Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) program on or before May 2025.
