Apprentice-Style Learning in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine

For centuries, students of acupuncture and herbal medicine have learned as apprentices of masters. Hours of close observation, discussion and hands-on guidance allow seasoned doctors to pass on their lifetime of knowledge and skills to the next generation.

National University of Health Sciences recreates apprentice-style learning in both its Master of Science in Acupuncture (MAc) and Master of Science in Herbal Medicine (MAc-HM) programs.

Learn from the Masters

Our teaching clinicians have an average of over 20 years of experience. They are international leaders in their field who have made the next generation of students their priority. NUHS acupuncture faculty specialize in their own individual areas of expertise. Each semester, students can work with the clinician of their choice to learn more about:

  • Women’s health
  • Cancer
  • Allergies
  • Immune disorders
  • Pain management
  • Musculoskeletal conditions
  • Neurological disorders

Clinical Excellence

Beginning in your second trimester, you will start observing in the NUHS clinic. By your fourth trimester, you will start treating patients under faculty supervision. Our clinicians walk you through each patient case, covering diagnosis and treatment options. You will hone your skills while learning reasoning strategies straight from seasoned professionals.

NUHS offers more clinical training hours than most similar programs. The MAc-HM program provides you with 1200 hours of clinical training, while the MAc offers 840. After 180 hours of observation, you will treat patients as an apprentice. Your master clinician will guide you every step of the way.

Your mentoring continues when you treat pain patients at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center or veterans with PTSD in our clinic. You will graduate with the confidence and skills to treat your own patients.

Accessible Faculty

National University of Health Sciences boasts six full-time professors in Acupuncture. Alongside our part-time faculty, students have more access to experts both in and out of the classroom.

Classes and clinic shifts have a low student-to-faculty ratio of only 6:1. Your instructors will be able to provide the personal attention you need to tackle challenging topics and patient cases. Class time revolves around collaborative discussions rather than just lectures.

At every turn, we pair you with masters of the art in apprentice-style learning for acupuncture and herbal medicine excellence.
