Each August and September, interns in the doctor of chiropractic program at National University perform medical examinations for both current and prospective Chicago Blackhawks players at the United Center in Chicago.

Manuel Duarte, DC, chair of clinical practice at NUHS says, “Every year, a team of interns and I perform various screening tests, including reach measurements, blood draws, and other health exams as part of an integrative medical team. We work alongside a cardiologist, athletic trainers and other specialists. In August, we see the new recruits, and in September we see the regular team.”

The interns and team perform the exams in the Chicago Bulls locker room, since the Blackhawks locker room is in full use during that time. Afterwards, the interns enjoy lunch with the other physicians, and then receive a tour of the locker room and training facility led by the Blackhawks’ head trainer. Often the coach and other team managers stop by to express their appreciation for all the interns do.

“Our interns are trained in all of these procedures and are well qualified to be part of the integrative medical team responsible for examining the Blackhawks players,” says Dr. Duarte.   “Being a sports medicine physician, I’ve worked with pro teams in the past. It’s rewarding to offer our interns a hands-on opportunity to work with professional athletes, see the inside of a professional training room and meet professional players and trainers while being well received. It’s a good way to give the interns an idea of the doors that might be open to them after graduation.”

National’s DC program, both in Illinois and Florida, have several clinic outreach events each year that focus on sports medicine, as well as several faculty, such as Dr. Duarte, who are leaders in chiropractic sports medicine.
