Some people feel the need to be constantly surrounded by others or immersed in social settings. While social interaction is important and fulfilling, what happens when you go home to a quiet house or apartment? That silence can feel lonely if you’re not comfortable with yourself. I’ve never really been the extroverted type, but I still experienced those feelings of loneliness until I began discovering hobbies and activities, I genuinely enjoyed doing by myself. It turns out, I am pretty great company! This process wasn’t always easy — it can be daunting to step away from the constant buzz of friends and family — but I realized something important: no matter how amazing my support system is, the one person who will always be with me, through every high and low, is me.
Loving your own company doesn’t mean isolating yourself; it means building a strong, trusting relationship with yourself. It’s about learning what makes you happy, setting personal goals and giving yourself the space to grow. I’ve started incorporating moments of self-reflection into my daily routine — checking in with myself and making sure I’m doing what I need or want to get done. This simple habit has helped ease my anxiety and strengthen my sense of self.
Of course, this journey isn’t perfect. There are days when I forget these lessons or feel a bit off track, but I remind myself that tomorrow is always a new day — a fresh start to become an even better version of the already amazing person I am. So, if you’re feeling uneasy about spending time alone, I encourage you to take that first step. Try a new hobby, go for a walk with just your thoughts or write down your dreams and goals. The more time you spend with yourself, the more you’ll realize how incredible your own company truly is.
