Serials Assistant (Part-time)
Job Summary
The Serials Assistant manages serials operations including serials selection meetings, check-in, claims, exchange, shelf organization and vendor communications. The Serials Assistant maintains a list of current subscriptions and establishes procedures. The Serials Assistant opens the library one day per week.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Prepares Ordering from serials vendor:
- Identifies sources and prices of journals requested by faculty.
- Keeps lists of recommendations for upcoming orders.
- Manages Serials Selection meeting and provides information on prices, usage, delivery problems and other issues that influence purchasing decisions.
- Handles ongoing communications with vendors and publishers.
- Delivery and check-in
- Check in journals, print and e-mailed.
- Identify and handle claims for late and non-arrivals.
- Locate and order back issues from exchange lists etc.
- Organization
- Be sure the journals are checked in and accessible on the library shelves within a short time after their arrival.
- Manage physical organization of journals on shelves including current and bound sections.
- Assess space allocation and manage shifting, recommending withdrawals to make space
- Dispose of withdrawn journals.
- Participate in planning and organization of print journals in remote location.
- Oversee removal of withdrawn titles from all lists and records.
- Move current journals to bound shelves at turn of calendar year.
- Assist clients with the location and use of journals, print and electronic.
- Administration
- Manage fiscal files for journals.
- Maintain a master list of journal subscriptions and locations.
- Report statistics on current subscriptions, bound, withdrawn titles, total titles and total subscriptions, and usage, etc.
- Make recommendations to improve serials operations.
- Keep up with new procedures and technologies and use them to streamline serials operations.
OTHER DUTIES:
• Prepare and open the library once a week. Doors open at 7:30 a.m.
• Daily report important events, facilities or other problems, and any suggestions to the Public Services Librarian.
• Participate in student orientations.
• Provide back-up for library circulation
• Promote LRC library use through good public relations etc.
• Advise LRC Library Director of any unmet needs that interfere with the library’s attainment of its objectives.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
• Library Technical Assistant certificate
• Attention to detail.
• Accuracy.
• Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 30 pounds.
• Knowledge of or ability to learn relevant computer programs.
Preferred
• Experience with serials, acquisitions and/or bibliographic searching.
Salary:
$15.00/hr
