Two NUHS Florida Students Honored With Community Service Award

Alicia Irvin and Michael Abenoja were honored this week with the Fall 2018 NUHS (Florida) Community Service Award. The award, presented each trimester, was established in 2016 by the Florida site to recognize students who have demonstrated significant commitment and dedication to serving the community through their time, actions, activities and dedication above and beyond what is expected of them as students. Honorees also must serve as a role model for other students by demonstrating compassion for helping others through their community service efforts.

Alicia Irvin completed 78 hours of community service, including as a Club officer for MoPal and Sports Council for three trimesters. She also volunteered and gained hands-on experience at the Disney half marathon and Seniors Games in the triage tents. She said that "volunteering through NUHS has helped strengthen my connection to the community, and the values that are further engrained during those experiences are something that I will take with me into practice."

Michael Abenoja provided 80 hours of community service, including as a Club officer for MoPal and Sports Council for three trimesters. He gained hands-on experience volunteering at Masters Rowing and Senior Games in the triage tents, and the coordination of speakers and co-presentation of taping techniques to clubs. "As president for both the Sports Council and Motion Palpation clubs, I gained valuable experiences that will help me in practice and also gave me the platform to share my personal involvement in the medical field," he said.

Congratulations to Alicia and Michael on their achievements. For more information on the award criteria and application, please contact Florida Student Services Support at 727-803-6121
