NUHS has a long and proud history of generating and supporting original research in basic science, clinical science, and health science education.
Recently, NUHS implemented an evidence-based practice curriculum for all professional degree programs. Indeed, National has always insisted that technique, adjustments and therapies taught in its degree programs have their basis in sound scientific principles backed by research.
Students at NUHS not only have access to evidence-based practice journal clubs, classes and seminars, NUHS offers qualified students research fellowships and a postgraduate residency in research as well. In addition, NUHS' Learning Resource Center is one of the largest health science libraries in the region, offering access to numerous scientific journals, computer databases and over 15,000 items in print and electronic media.
Here are more "National Firsts" demonstrating our leadership in research:
- National was the first chiropractic institution to establish a dedicated Patient and Research Center in 1980, and the first recipient of a $1 million private grant from which came a majority of the important early basic and clinical science research in the chiropractic field.
- National was the first to receive a National Institutes of Health RO1 grant to an institution with a chiropractic program, and continues to be one of the highest producers of original research in chiropractic medicine. Today, several of our faculty participate in a wide variety of grant-funded research projects, and continue to publish articles and texts contributing important new findings in the fields of chiropractic, massage therapy, integrative medicine, clinical application and basic science.
- National was the first chiropractic institution to establish a blind-peer-reviewed scientific journal indexed by the National Library of Medicine. Today, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) is the official research journal of the American Chiropractic Association. It is one of three scientific research journals published by NUHS.
