LOMBARD – National University of Health Sciences proudly conferred diplomas on the first 14 graduates of its Master of Science in Advanced Clinical Practice (MSACP) degree program during commencement ceremonies on August 20.

The new master of science degree program, which opened its doors two years ago, gives doctors of chiropractic medicine an even broader immersion in advanced clinical studies, which include neurology, nutrition and functional medicine, pharmacology, psychological issues of illness, advanced imaging, ethics and research, to name a few. These subjects are undertaken in addition to the work of refining and expanding the physician's clinical skills and problem solving ability.

The degree is designed around the physician’s concurrent clinical practice. In this way, the physician can integrate his or her new depth of medical knowledge directly into patient care.

“The master of science degree in advanced clinical practice is designed to produce top caliber physicians with advanced academic and clinical credentials,” explains NUHS President James F. Winterstein. “These are individuals who will be well-prepared as academic leaders in the chiropractic profession, as well as physicians who can bring an unparalleled depth of knowledge to the ‘whole health healing’ art of chiropractic medicine.”

The first class of MSACP graduates from National, including several alumni and faculty, are Drs. Kelly M. Baltazar, Creighton V. Engel, James R. Jenkins, Theodore Lawrence Johnson Jr., Heather E. Jones, Michael Krys, Nicholas LeRoy, Gregory R. Lillie, David C. Radford, Hector Rivera-Melo, Kristina Lynn Sargent, Jonathan R. Soltys, Tamara Ann Sukup, and Adam E. Tilson.

Dr. Tamara Sukup, the class valedictorian, relinquished her privilege to deliver the valedictory address to Dr. David Radford of Solon, Ohio, a 1977 National graduate and the “senior” member of the class. Dr. Radford said: “The purpose of this course is to enrich the scope of practice, enabling chiropractic physicians to better serve our patients in a conservative primary care capacity, and to better integrate with our friends in allopathic and osteopathic medicine. As chiropractic physicians, we have an important primary care role to play in the health of our nation. We should never back down from that responsibility.”

The two year, 36 credit hour program incorporates weekend and distance learning courses, and its faculty has heretofore been comprised of academic luminaries in the field of integrative medicine, including: Jerrilyn Cambron, DC, MPH, PhD; Eric Deppert, MD, FACP; David Gursky, PhD; David Miller, MD, FAAP; David Seaman, DC; Dennis Skogsbergh, DC, DACBR; Rand Swenson, DC, MD, PhD; and Alex Vasquez, DC, ND;

Chiropractic physicians who would like to explore earning their MSACP through National, can receive more information from the university’s Lincoln College of Postprofessional, Graduate and Continuing Education at 1-630-889-6622, or by visiting www.nuhs.edu. # # #
