Patient Care

Naturopathic Services

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic care combines traditional and natural healing methods with modern science to balance mental, emotional, and physical health. Your physician employing naturopathic medicine might recommend botanical and homeopathic products, nutritional and lifestyle counseling, hydrotherapy, and other gentle treatments that support the body's own healing power. At the same time, your physician might also recommend blood tests, diagnostic imaging, urinalysis, and other modern medical diagnostic procedures. Your physician will work with you to not only improve your condition, but to enhance your ability to maintain good health.

Who can benefit from Naturopathic Medicine?

Everyone can benefit from naturopathic medicine. This includes men, women, and children of all ages with acute and chronic conditions, and any patient interested in disease prevention, nutrition and lifestyle counseling. Some common conditions that benefit from naturopathic care include:

  • digestive problems
  • fatigue
  • food and respiratory allergies
  • hormonal issues
  • headaches
  • heart disease

Who will be my doctor at NUHS?

The NUHS clinician applying naturopathic medical principles in your care will be a DC or MD. Your doctor's team will include input and assistance from interns and professionals trained in naturopathic medicine. Because we are an integrative medical clinic, your clinician may also recommend that experts in chiropractic, acupuncture, oriental medicine, or massage therapy be part of your care.

What is an appointment like?

The first appointment is usually 1 to 2 hours long. You will be asked numerous questions on all aspects of your health including mental, emotional and physical habits and symptoms. These questions are asked so that your physician can make an accurate diagnosis and prepare an individualized plan for care. Follow-up appointments can last 30 to 60 minutes depending on the complexity of your case. If at any time your case requires additional care beyond what our clinic can provide, your physician will discuss this with you and provide a referral.

How do I get started?

At our Whole Health Center in Lombard, you can request an appointment with a primary care physician (DC or MD) who is either trained in or works with experts in naturopathic medicine. If you are a current patient interested in trying naturopathic medicine, you can ask your current National University clinician about integrating naturopathic care into your treatment plan.
