Professor, Basic Sciences
Dr. Robert Appleyard, Chair of the Department of Basic Sciences, has been on the faculty at NUHS since 1995. He holds a PhD in veterinary physiology from Washington State University, where his studies focused on vertebrate mammalian physiology. Afterwards, he completed a post-doctoral research fellowship on cardio-vascular function at University of California, San Francisco.
Prior to joining National's faculty, Dr. Appleyard was director of a research laboratory for the department of cardiac surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, where he researched surgical techniques for heart preservation.
Dr. Appleyard is currently working with students on a reseach project involving measuring variations in the heart rate in reaction to autonomic nervous responses.
His main avocational activity is rowing, a sport which he has been involved with since college. Not only has Dr. Appleyard served as an official judge for regional and national rowing events, but he also served as a rowing official at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
